Anodizing is an electrochemical process that enhances the natural oxide surface layer of aluminum by creating a more durable anodized surface that can accept a variety of (often translucent) colors.
In the anodizing process, extruded aluminum parts - which undergo a series of cleaning, rinsing and etching steps - are immersed in an acidic electrolyte, and an electric current is passed through the solution. The cathode is mounted on the inside of the anodizing bath, while the aluminum extrusion acts as the anode. Oxygen ions are released from the electrolyte and combine with the aluminum atoms on the surface of the anodized extrusion, resulting in an aluminum oxide layer that is fully bonded to the aluminum below. Dyes can then be applied, and the final step is a sealing phase to enhance durability and prevent corrosion.
